FAQ: Can autism be diagnosed in infants?

A: While autism is typically diagnosed in toddlers and young children, some early signs can be observed in infants. These may include:

  • Limited or no eye contact by 6 months
  • No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or facial expressions by 9 months
  • Little or no babbling by 12 months
  • No gestures like pointing or waving by 12 months

However, a definitive diagnosis is usually not made until later, as many developmental milestones are reached after infancy.
